Soft Story Retrofit
A soft story is any building or structure that has an alternate foundation than normal. Buildings with stilts, pillars, or parking structure are all considered soft story. Soft stories are more vulnerable to earthquake damage since they have a less stable foundation. We have been improving the soft stories of Mountain View and the surrounding areas for several years with an immense amount of success. The increasing earthquakes have not affected the buildings that we have worked on, and we plan on continuing that success rate by gaining more clients who need soft story retrofits.
Soft story buildings are extremely vulnerable to lateral damage. Generally, soft story buildings were not built with the idea of earthquake protection, so they are weak and susceptible to collapse. Now, it is well-known that soft story buildings are prone to lateral shifting during seismic activity. As they sway, side to side, the soft story building may crack and break. Soft story retrofitting is focused on improving the weak points that are at risk of breaking during an earthquake. We do this through a number of ways, but the important thing is knowing that the short story building will be better suited to withstand an earthquake.
High Volume of Residencies
The designs of many homes and apartments in the city involve tuck-under parking to maximize space. This means that a high volume of residencies are vulnerable to earthquake damage and should be under consideration for retrofit. If you own an apartment complex with this type of parking, then you may be at risk of a collapsed building that results in loss of life, property damage, and an immense lawsuit. Luckily, Mountain View Retrofit is prepared to provide the retrofit that your building and tenants deserve.
We make soft story retrofit an easy and non-complicated process. The results may be complex and able to withstand shifting earth plates, but we will make the installation a pain-free process. There is no need to feel overwhelmed or not understand what we are doing since we will keep you involved every step of the way. We create a step by step plan that we will follow and will provide to our customers, so they can follow along too, if desired. Our step by step plan ensures that all of our employees are on the same page and able to transition from one step to the next without issue.
Mandatory Retrofit Programs
San Francisco and the surrounding area are implementing or have implemented a mandatory retrofit program since 2013. The city has just completed the second tier of the program with two more to be completed within the next two years. All residencies with three total stories that contain wood frames are required to take part in this program. For more information on this, then contact us to see if you are within the area that we service. Or, look up the Department of Building Inspections for more information and to better understand whether your building meets the required standards or not.
